People may apply for permanent status in Canada in several ways. These are described below. This is merely an overview and not a detailed analysis of the Canadian immigration laws. |

Skilled Workers |

Skilled workers are assessed based on the Selection Grid (points system). This grid assigns points for education, language ability, employment experience, age, arranged employment in Canada, and adaptability. An applicant must have a minimum of one year of work experience within the past 10 years in a management occupation or in an occupation normally requiring university, college or technical. As well, an applicant must have funds available that are sufficient for settlement. Sixty-seven (67) points out of one hundred (100) must be attained. |

A sponsor is Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada who is a foreign national's relative, spouse, common-law partner or a conjugal partner. A sponsor can make an application for a relative abroad who is/are: |

orphaned brothers/sisters (who has been orphaned, is under 18 years of age and not a spouse or common law partner) |

nephews/nieces (who has been orphaned, is under 18 years of age and not a spouse or common law partner) |

grandchildren, (who has been orphaned, is under 18 years of age and not a spouse or common law partner) |
